The Bartels Scholar for Public Engagement will learn about how the Johnson Museum and its Education Department activate a globe-spanning art collection for learning and engagement, with opportunities to pursue their own interests and projects. This summer-only position is for up to 39 hours per week, over an approximately 8-to-10-week period (for a total of 312 hours) from mid-May to mid-August. This internship may require working both in-person and virtually.
This internship will include a mixture of independent research and hands-on learning, with the goals of both assisting the Education Department with programs and tasks as needed and developing a final project in alignment with the applicant’s interests.
A focal point of this internship is a fully funded research trip designed to support the intern’s final project. The intern receives a travel stipend and paid time for the purposes of scholarly and professional development to a location within the United States.
Applicants must include a resume and 250–500-word statement of interest explaining why they are interested in this position specifically and in museums generally, their relevant background and skills, and a preliminary area of focus for their project. Applications without these materials will not be considered.

The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, located at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, is a prominent art museum designed by celebrated architect I.M. Pei, the building features distinctive modern design and panoramic views of Cayuga Lake and the surrounding landscape. The museum houses over 35,000 works of art, including Asian, European, African, and American pieces, spanning ancient to contemporary periods. It offers free admission and serves as an educational and cultural hub for both the Cornell community and the public, hosting exhibitions, events, and programs that encourage engagement with the arts.
Purpose of the position
The intern will have an opportunity to collaborate with staff in the Education Department to shape their experience and their project in accordance with their interests. Developing research project and organizing research trip.
Duties and responsibilities
Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching about art in the galleries
- Technology as an educational tool in museums
- Building connections through outreach
- Campus and community audience development
- Planning programs and events for diverse audiences
- Interpretative and didactic materials
- Accessibility and other critical museum issues
Knowledge/Experience required
- This position is only for Summer ’25. Applicants must be available for all of Summer ’25.
- Students from every field, major, and college are encouraged to apply
- Strong interest in art, museums, and education
- Excellent organizational, communication, research, and interpersonal skills to work reliably and creatively with Museum staff
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm and a high level of attention to detail
- Specialized skills, such as proficiency with digital platforms, public speaking, teaching, or art-making are a bonus, but not required
