Cornell endorsement is required.

The Beinecke Scholarship enables students in the traditional liberal arts to pursue graduate school opportunities they may not otherwise have been able to pursue. The award provides $5,000 immediately prior to attending graduate school and a maximum stipend of $30,000 per year while in graduate school. Student should have a documented history of need-based financial aid.  About 20 awards are given annually.

Read carefully the Beinecke Foundation website for further information.

Important Dates

February 1 Endorsement Deadline: Application due to the Fellowship Coordinator. See Application Process.
February Cornell Endorsement Committee reviews applications and selects one applicant to be endorsed to the Beinecke Foundation. Applicants are notified of endorsement decisions by the fellowship coordinator.
March 28 Foundation deadline for receipt of application material.
May-June Announcement of new Beinecke Scholars.

Eligibility

U.S. citizens or U.S. national students in the junior class who intend to pursue graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences, and who must have a record of receiving need-based financial aid to support their undergraduate study. Students without such a record are not eligible.

Selection

Applicants first submit their materials to a campus committee for review in January. Upon review of application material, Cornell may choose one student as a nominee to the national Beinecke Scholarship competition. Students’ applications must be processed and endorsed through the CCS fellowships office to be eligible for the competition at the regional and/or national level. Endorsement decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

Selection decisions (both on-campus and at the national level) are based on the following criteria:

  • Academic record: Nominees should have a GPA of 3.8 or above.
  • Commitment to the study of one’s field: Preference will be given to those for whom the awarding of the scholarship would significantly enhance the likelihood of the student attending graduate school.
  • Commitment to one’s community: Students planning to attend professional school should illustrate a significant commitment to serving the community upon completion of their graduate studies.
  • Three letters of recommendation: These should be from faculty who can speak to your academic promise.

Application Process

Seniors and First-Year alumni applications must be processed and endorsed through the CCS fellowships office to be eligible for the competition. Endorsement decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

Application materials are available online.

The Fellowship Coordinator will forward your application materials to the Cornell Endorsement Committee. Make sure that you read the fine print on the application forms and that you have filled in all the blanks as you would for the final submission.
