Legal Assistance of Western New York (LawNY) is seeking volunteers for the newly created Clean Slate Legal Clinic!
Over the next three years, the New York State Clean Slate Act will seal many old criminal records in New York State, helping to remove barriers to housing, employment, and higher education that millions of New Yorkers currently face.
The Clean Slate Clinic provides community education about the Act and helps individuals to retrieve and review their criminal records, correct errors where necessary, and create plans for further action. Volunteers have the opportunity to conduct public outreach and, under supervision of LawNY attorneys, to meet directly with clients, draft and assist in filing legal motions, and observe court proceedings.
No previous legal experience is required, and students of any level (undergraduate and graduate) are welcome to participate. Law students who have completed their first year of law school may be able to take advantage of a practice order and present motions in court. In-person and remote opportunities are available.
This is a great opportunity to support your local community while gaining hands-on legal experience. Sign up via LawNY’s Pro Bono Portal today!
