Job description

Mood Fabrics is seeking a professional Seamstress/Sewist who is exceptionally skilled and detail-oriented, with proven expertise in analyzing and refining sewing patterns and a talent for creating clear, comprehensive sewing tutorials for an engaged audience within our dynamic fashion environment, focused on women’s silhouettes.

Responsibilities

  • Sew high-quality projects focused on women’s fashion silhouettes, demonstrating advanced construction techniques and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Develop and document detailed, step-by-step, visually engaging sewing tutorials catering to enthusiasts of various skill levels.
  • Expertly analyze, adapt, and refine existing sewing patterns, including beta patterns, to optimize clarity, accuracy, and sew-ability.
  • Proactively identify and troubleshoot issues in patterns, sewing instructions, and garment construction, providing effective and practical solutions.
  • Collaborate effectively with pattern makers and other team members (e.g., marketing) to ensure the veracity, value, and brand alignment of instructional content.
  • Manage workflow efficiently to meet project deadlines while maintaining exceptional quality in sewn samples and instructional materials.
  • Stay current with best practices in pattern drafting, sewing techniques, tutorial creation, and relevant tools.
  • Contribute to a dynamic and creative environment by sharing expertise and innovative ideas related to sewing and pattern development.

Qualifications

  • Advanced sewing skills with a thorough understanding of garment construction, particularly in women’s fashion silhouettes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and refining sewing patterns, including fit adaptation.
  • Proven ability to foresee and resolve pattern issues effectively.
  • Proficient in writing clear and comprehensive sewing pattern instructions and creating engaging tutorials.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in documenting sewing processes using photography, including image capturing and basic editing.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities related to garment construction and pattern development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong grammatical skills.
  • Demonstrated sewing portfolio required, showcasing advanced sewing projects and examples of pattern analysis or tutorial creation.

Additional Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in women’s fashion pattern-making, including drafting original designs, significant alterations, and advanced fit adaptation techniques.
  • Experience creating visually engaging and interactive sewing tutorials for online platforms, potentially including video or other multimedia elements, ideally demonstrating the consistent ability to sew and document 1-2 patterns weekly with comprehensive materials.
  • Familiarity with digital pattern drafting software (CAD) and technical flat drawing skills.
  • Experience teaching sewing or creating instructional content for an audience.
  • Comfort and experience with on-camera presentations or public speaking related to sewing techniques.
  • Experience fitting garments on live models and making real-time adjustments.
  • Active engagement within online sewing communities or maintaining a personal blog/social media presence showcasing sewing projects and tutorials.
  • Proven ability to manage and document multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of current trends in women’s fashion and garment construction techniques.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Google Suite and other relevant computer applications for documentation and content creation.
  • Strong self-motivation and independent work ethic.
  • Adaptability to change and the ability to produce quality work under deadlines.
  • Well-organized with the ability to maintain a professional studio space.
  • Excellent teamwork capabilities.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years of professional sewing experience, with a strong focus on garment construction, particularly in women’s wear.
  • Mandatory portfolio submission showcasing advanced sewing skills, pattern analysis/modification examples, and high-quality sewing tutorials.
  • Cover letter suggested (or writing sample)
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work in-person at our Lodi, NJ office.

Interview Process:

  • Virtual initial conference call
  • Practical assessment: Sewing sample & tutorial
  • Final in-person interview (Lodi office)
