Publishing Assistant Internship — Learn the Process. Launch the Product.
Company: Sports Media, Inc.
Location: Remote | Flexible Internship Length

Sports Media, Inc. is expanding boldly into the world of publishing — from books and magazines to educational manuals and multimedia formats. We’re seeking a driven, detail-oriented Publishing Assistant Intern who’s ready to step beyond theory and into the real-world workflow of publishing.

This internship isn’t about busywork. It’s about building real skills and contributing to real products. You’ll be embedded in active projects and trained in every phase of the publishing pipeline — from manuscript development to distribution.

If you’re passionate about writing, storytelling, education, or the future of media, this is your opportunity to gain insider experience in a fast-evolving publishing environment.

You will be embedded in the active publishing process — learning everything from manuscript preparation and design to ISBN registration, metadata optimization, and working with platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and print-on-demand publishing systems. You will also gain exposure to cross-departmental collaboration with editorial, copyright, design, video, and social media teams.

For candidates passionate about writing, storytelling, publishing, education, or the future of media, this is an unmatched opportunity to help bring creative and educational content to life.

What You’ll Learn and Contribute To:

  • Publishing Process from Start to Finish: Assist in transforming raw manuscripts into professional-grade publications across print, digital, and audio formats.
  • Print-on-Demand and Distribution: Gain hands-on experience with Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and other digital publishing platforms. Learn about metadata, ISBNs, barcodes, pricing models, and distribution logistics.
  • Collaboration Across Creative Teams: Work alongside designers, copy editors, social media strategists, and multimedia creators to build cohesive publishing campaigns.
  • Content Management and Layout: Help format books and magazines using tools like Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, and Canva. Support the layout and design process for both traditional and experimental publishing formats.
  • Marketing and Promotion: Contribute to outreach strategies targeting libraries, schools, bookstores, and educational platforms — including marketing collateral, press releases, and social campaigns.
  • Digital Publishing Trends: Understand the evolving landscape of self-publishing, audiobook production, and educational content creation.

Top Skills You Will Build:

  1. Real-world publishing workflow knowledge
  2. Print-on-demand publishing via Amazon KDP and IngramSpark
  3. Layout and design skills for books and magazines
  4. Content management and editorial workflow organization
  5. Project planning and team communication
  6. Copyright, metadata, and cataloging fundamentals
  7. Cross-platform content marketing and distribution

Qualifications:

  • Availability to attend team meetings on Mondays (9:00 AM MST), Wednesdays (10:00 AM MST), and Fridays (8:00 AM MST)
  • Academic background in Publishing, Journalism, English, Communications, Media Studies, or related fields
  • Strong attention to detail, with excellent organization and time management
  • Interest in books, storytelling, digital publishing, or educational media
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Google Docs; knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Canva is a plus
  • Able to collaborate effectively with multiple departments and meet deadlines

What You Gain:

  • Immersive, hands-on training in publishing across all major formats
  • Direct experience with industry-standard tools and platforms
  • Guidance from professionals in publishing, content marketing, and media development
  • Involvement in real projects, not just theoretical exercises
  • Opportunities to contribute to published works in education, entertainment, and sports media
  • Pathway to a potential apprenticeship or full-time role based on performance
  • Internship ranges 90 day minimum to 365 days
