The Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining & Milling Division (SEMO), located near Viburnum, MO (in the heart of the Mark Twain National Forest), is responsible for locating and extracting lead ore. The work takes place far below Earth’s surface, some 1,000 feet beneath the forested hills of southern Missouri. This area, rich in mineral deposits, is known as the Viburnum Trend. Named for the nearby town of Viburnum, mining and milling has taken place here for more than 40 years. While best known for having high-purity lead ore, SEMO also extracts zinc and copper minerals from underground mines.
Learning Objectives:
Over the course of the internship, the student will develop practical experience in duties/tasks related to exploration and resource geology.
Work Plan:
- Data clean-up involving digitization of historic exploration drill hole data that will enable The Doe Run Company to advance its block modeling capabilities of the Viburnum Trend.
- Checking the quality of the database.
- Data entry.
- Conducting tests, sample collection, and data analysis.
Guidelines for Academic Background:
- Completion of at least 40 hours towards a Geology, Geological Engineering, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering, chemistry or related degree.
- GPA of at least 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale).
- Some experience with Microsoft Office & Excel preferred.
- Related Major(other engineering or technical degree paths related to Geology or Metallurgy may be accepted.
- Must be able to commute to the Viburnum location on a daily basis
- Must be available for the entire duration of the Summer Internship (end of May through full first week of August)
- No work experience in mining field required
- Very strong verbal and written communication skills
- A strong work ethic is required
