Job purpose
Candidate will work directly with the Town Engineer and Stormwater Engineer, at the Chelmsford DPW, on various projects throughout the Town of Chelmsford including tasks related to compliance with EPA’s NPDES Stormwater Phase 2 program and permits (including field work).
Monday – Thursday, 8 am – 3:30 pm, with optional additional hours.
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist the Town Engineer and Stormwater Engineer with various engineering projects.
- Assist the Town Engineer and Stormwater Engineer with the requirements of the Stormwater Management Program, this may involve:
- Locate drain maps either electronically or manually by reviewing through files
- Scanning plans
- GPS mapping of drainage structures and some GIS input
- Field verification of drainage structures; open storm drains/drain manholes for internal viewing
- Inspecting drainage features and outfalls
- Collecting stormwater samples and analyzing for pollutants
- Provide periodic progress reports to Engineers
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Engineering concepts.
- Ability to read various types of civil engineering site plans.
- Driver’s License
- Safety-toe field shoes
- Own transportation to/from the office
- Be prepared to spend time in the field in various weather conditions
- Must carry own insurance
Working conditions
- Frequent periods spent walking, standing, bending, stretching
- Frequent periods spent outside, requiring exposure to all types of weather
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs
- Potential exposure to chemical and biological hazards, requiring exercise of proper safety precautions
- Occasional work around heavy equipment, requiring exercise of proper safety precautions
Physical requirements
Work may require strenuous activity. Standing for long periods of time, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching. Regular auto travel and exposure to all weather conditions.
