Every fall, Cornell Career Services welcomes law schools and health professions schools to campus for two conference events. Each includes a large tabling fair featuring admissions representatives, alongside workshops, panels, and other informational sessions. These events offer excellent opportunities for students and alumni at every stage to learn more about graduate programs, explore career options, and receive crucial insight into application processes.
Explore the sections below for a full listing of this year’s conference events. Attend one event, drop in and out, or stay for the whole day. Whether you just beginning to consider law school or medical school, or you are already well on your way to applying, you’ll find something here for you!
Check out the Pre-Law and the Pre-Graduate modules in the Career Development Toolkit for information on exploring your graduate school options and preparing applications. Wherever you are in your pre-professional journey, the Pre-Law and Pre-Health Conferences have something to offer you. Here are some key strategies for making sure that you get the most out of these events:
- Consider your goals! Take some time to think about why you are attending the event and what you would like to take away. Perhaps you’re working on applications, and so you may be looking for specific insights to refine your materials or hoping to connect with particular programs at the fair. Or maybe you’re still exploring, in which case you might like to connect with practitioners in the field or start to work out how different programs compare to one another. Look through the full list of each day’s events above, and mark you calendars for the ones that relate to your goals.
- Do your research! Check out the full schedule of events, and visit Handshake to see all of the schools attending the Law School Fair and Pre-Health Fair. For those you want to meet specifically, review their websites and develop questions that go beyond what you can easily find online.
- Explore! Consider attending a session or connecting with a school that may be outside of your specific interests. This can be a great way to get a better understanding of the many pathways available to you and can help you to better answer questions about why you selected the pathway you did.
- Be prepared for conversation! While you will certainly have opportunities to ask questions of the schools in attendance, they may also have questions for you too. It is not uncommon for the schools to ask you about your interest in their program, why you want to be a doctor/PA/dentist/lawyer, etc. Consider how you’ll introduce yourself and talk about your goals.
- Dress sensibly! Formal business attire isn’t necessary, but you will want to consider business/smart casual. First impressions count!
- Arrive on time! Please be sure you arrive to any presentations/panels on time. If you need to arrive late, please be sure to enter as quietly as possible as to not disrupt the presenter or other students at the session.
- Ask for help! Throughout the fairs, you’ll find Cornell Career Services “Tour Guides” who can assist you in navigating the event, brainstorming questions, and even breaking the ice with representatives.
- Have fun! These events are designed for you to learn more about the legal and health professions and to meet new people, all of which should be a positive and enjoyable experience!
Attending the Pre-Law and Pre-Health Fairs
Law schools and health professions programs interested in attending the fair may register at the employer links below:
- Law School Fair (October 22, 2024 – 1:30pm to 4:30pm)
- Pre-Health Fair (October 23, 2024 – 1:30pm to 4:30pm)
Note: In previous years, Cornell Career Services hosted a “Graduate and Professional School Fair”, which showcased graduate programs in a wide range of academic disciplines. Beginning in 2024, this event has been replaced with the Pre-Health Conference and Fair, which focus specifically on health-related graduate programs (e.g. medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, etc.)
Organizing an Individual Visit to Cornell
In addition to the Pre-Law and Pre-Health Conferences, Cornell Career Services often hosts representatives from a wide range of graduate and professional programs (including PhD, MA/MS, MBA, MPH, MPA) for individual events throughout the year. Sessions are held both on-campus and virtually and are posted to Handshake as they are organized. Check back regularly for updates!
Graduate programs interested in connecting with Cornell students and alumni, including Cornell programs, are encouraged to register as employers on Handshake and to contact Alex Jablonski Assistant Director for Pre-Law and Pre-Graduate Advising, aj486@cornell.edu, for assistance.
