Design Technician

Overview
Brooksource is seeking a Design Technician to support Distribution Design operations for a leading electric utility company. This role is responsible for developing overhead and underground distribution designs, meeting on site with developers, contractors, and customers to scope new work, and translating field conditions into constructible design packages that get released to the line crews.
This position is based out of the company’s Martinsburg, WV service center and splits time roughly evenly between field work and office design work. The Martinsburg shop is one of the fastest-moving design groups in the organization, and these openings are the result of growth in customer demand rather than backfill. This role is ideal for early-career candidates who want real ownership quickly, enjoy variety over a fixed desk routine, and are looking to build a long-term career supporting utility operations.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a solid commitment to all aspects of safety
- Meet on site with developers, builders, contractors, and customers to scope new service and distribution work
- Stake poles, take field measurements, and assess job sites for constructability
- Develop overhead and underground distribution designs in the company’s design applications (DDS and Cruise)
- Acquire right-of-way and easements required to move jobs forward
- Complete the documentation and coordination needed to release a job packet to construction
- Partner with the lines group and fellow designers to keep the construction backlog moving
- Provide ongoing assistance during emergencies and storm-related activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills & Experience
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree; field of study is flexible — engineering, engineering technology, construction, drafting, or an unrelated degree paired with strong motivation
- Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfortable representing the company in front of developers, contractors, and homeowners
- Highly organized and self-directed, with the ability to keep a high volume of jobs moving simultaneously
- Willingness to seek guidance and advice to fill gaps in understanding
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally between job sites
- Drafting, CAD, or GIS experience preferred (AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS)
- Exposure to electric utility, distribution, or civil/site design work preferred
- Basic knowledge of electric theory preferred
First 90 Days
- 30 days — Software access and setup, with ride-alongs alongside the lines group and other designers to learn how work flows from design through construction
- 60 days — Designing your own jobs with support from your supervisor and the broader team
- 90 days — Owning your own geographic area and meeting with developers independently
Work Environment
- On-site position based out of the company’s Martinsburg, WV service center
- Approximately 50% field work and 50% office design work, flexed around job schedules and drive time
- Field work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions
- May provide support during storm and other emergency response activities
- Reports to a Martinsburg-based supervisor who is directly involved in mentoring and development; in-house software and designer training are available

The hourly pay range for this position is determined based on a number of factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and the specific requirements of the role. Final rate will be discussed during the interview process.
