Tax Associate

Richard B. Homes, CPA, LLC | Charleston, South Carolina | Full-Time

Richard B. Homes, CPA, LLC is a Charleston, South Carolina CPA firm providing tax, accounting, payroll, and consulting services — “Accounting for Life.” We are seeking a Tax Associate to join our team and support tax and accounting engagements for a diverse client base of individuals, businesses, estates, trusts, and non-profits.

About the Role

As Tax Associate, you will prepare individual, corporate, and partnership income tax returns, provide QuickBooks accounting support to clients, and provide client communication as needed throughout the year. Working alongside our staff and firm owner, you will be part of a close-knit team focused on accuracy, responsiveness, and exceptional client service. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional with public accounting experience to deepen their technical skills, gain broad exposure across client types, and grow within a well-established, client-focused CPA firm. Key Responsibilities

Tax Preparation & Compliance

  • Prepare individual (Form 1040), corporate (Forms 1120 and 1120-S), and partnership (Form 1065) federal and state income tax returns
  • Assist with fiduciary (Form 1041), gift, and non-profit (Form 990) returns as needed
  • Tax planning: Prepare quarterly estimated tax calculations, extensions, and year-end tax projections
  • Assist with responses to IRS and South Carolina Department of Revenue notices and correspondence
  • Research tax questions using firm research tools and document conclusions in client workpapers
  • Helping clients meet all compliance deadlines, including extension, estimated payment, and filing due dates

Accounting & Client Support

  • Perform QuickBooks bookkeeping and write-up work, including account reconciliations and adjusting journal entries
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements to support tax return preparation
  • Assist with occasional payroll tax filings if necessary, Forms 1099 and W-2, and sales and use tax returns
  • Gather, organize, scan and document client financial information and tax support, keeping thorough client files

Client Service & Teamwork

  • Maintain regular client contact throughout the year, promptly returning calls and emails
  • Use the firm’s secure client portal to exchange documents and manage e-signatures
  • Work collaboratively with staff members and the firm owner, keeping them informed of important developments
  • Incorporate reviewer feedback and continually build technical knowledge and efficiency
  • Maintain accurate time records and submit timesheets promptly each pay period
  • Follow all firm policies, including client confidentiality, data safeguarding, and cybersecurity/phishing awareness practices
  • Pursue ongoing professional development through continuing tax and accounting education

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation a plus
  • 1–3 years of public accounting experience or internship with a CPA firm
  • Accounting and tax preparation background preferred, including individual, corporate, and partnership returns
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks (Online and Desktop) and professional tax preparation software preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; comfortable learning new software applications
  • AI-assisted tax research tools preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a client-service mindset
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work extended hours during peak tax seasons
  • CPA candidate or interest in pursuing CPA licensure a plus

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $55,000 to $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience and credentials.

Charleston, South Carolina — on-site.
