Town Comptroller | Town of Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant, New York | $175,000 – $185,000

The Town of Mount Pleasant, New York, is seeking an experienced financial leader to serve as Town Comptroller, overseeing the financial and accounting operations that support a community of nearly 45,000 residents.

Reporting to the Town Board, the Comptroller serves as a key financial advisor while overseeing an approximately $65 million annual budget and leading a three-person team. The role carries responsibility for budgeting and financial reporting, audits, bonded debt, capital assets, municipal financing, and the financial policies and procedures that support operations across the Town.

The next Comptroller will join a well-established organization with an experienced staff and supportive Town Board. Priorities include strengthening budgeting and financial practices across the Town; developing new purchasing processes and procedures; helping department heads understand and manage within their budgets; strengthening internal controls; and providing clear, forward-looking financial information to support Town decision-making.

Mount Pleasant is seeking a leader who combines strong accounting and municipal finance expertise with sound judgment, clear communication, and the ability to work effectively across the organization. The successful candidate will be comfortable advising elected officials, guiding staff, working directly with department heads, and translating complex financial information into practical guidance for decision-makers.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • At least four years of accounting experience, including one year of supervisory accounting experience.
  • A related Master’s degree may substitute for one year of the required work experience. There is no substitution for the required year of supervisory accounting experience.

Preferred experience and credentials include:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential.
  • Public-sector or municipal finance experience.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and practices, including GASB requirements.
  • Experience with MUNIS or a comparable financial management system.

Compensation & Benefits

The position offers:

  • Salary: $175,000 – $185,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Medical insurance, with employees contributing 25% toward coverage.
  • Vacation leave, negotiable based on experience.
  • 12 sick days annually.
  • 3 personal days annually.
  • Participation in the New York State and Local Employees’ Retirement System.

Residency: Town of Mount Pleasant residency is not required. In accordance with New York State Public Officers Law, the Town Comptroller must reside in Westchester County or an adjoining county within New York State.
