Building Global Connections: Virtual Career Fair – Discover Opportunities in China

The Virtual Career Fair: Discover Opportunities in China connected Cornell students and China‑based employers through a focused, globally oriented recruiting experience. Designed to support students exploring career pathways connected to China—particularly Cornell students from China—the fair created meaningful opportunities for discovery, preparation, and real‑time engagement without the limitations of geography. 

Hosted entirely online, the event reflected the growing importance of region‑specific and globally minded career programming. Students gained direct access to employers across industries, while employers were able to engage early with talented, internationally focused Cornell candidates.

Wednesday, March 18 | 7:30–9:30 PM (ET) 
Virtual Career Fair: Discover Opportunities in China 
Audience: Cornell students from China and China‑based employers 
Format: Virtual (Handshake) 

Zoom registration was required for the preview event. For the fair itself, students registered through Handshake for individual employer sessions, including 30‑minute group information sessions and one‑on‑one conversations with recruiters. 

In advance of the fair, students were invited to attend the China Career Fair Preview: Employer Introduction, a dedicated preparation session designed to help participants navigate the event with confidence and intention. 

The preview provided: 

  • Early exposure to participating employers 
  • Support in identifying organizations aligned with individual interests 
  • Guidance on planning targeted conversations and prioritizing sessions 
  • Context for navigating a virtual fair environment effectively 

This preparatory experience supported students at a wide range of exploration stages—from those actively applying to roles to those still learning about career opportunities in China. 

During the Virtual Career Fair: Discover Opportunities in China, students connected directly with employers through a combination of group sessions and individualized conversations. Employers shared insights into open roles, hiring timelines, application processes, organizational culture, and long‑term career pathways. 

Through this format, students were able to:

  • Explore internship and full‑time opportunities across multiple industries 
  • Ask thoughtful, role‑specific questions 
  • Learn how to position themselves competitively in the China job market 
  • Build professional relationships regardless of physical location 

The structure of the fair encouraged both thoughtful exploration and focused engagement, prompting students to think beyond job titles and consider how their skills and interests align with evolving workforce needs in China. 

For participating employers, the virtual fair offered a targeted platform to engage with highly motivated, globally minded Cornell students interested in working in China. 

Employers had the opportunity to: 

  • Promote internship and full‑time roles 
  • Share their organization’s mission, culture, and hiring priorities 
  • Discuss in‑demand skills and emerging talent needs 
  • Build early connections to support both immediate and long‑term recruiting goals 

The virtual format enabled efficient, high‑impact engagement while preserving the depth of conversation necessary for meaningful relationship‑building. 

Recruiting Outcomes: One Month Post Fair

Initial outcomes following the fair demonstrated strong recruiting momentum: 

  • Employer One: Three candidates in mid‑stage interviews 
  • Employer Two: Three candidates in mid‑stage interviews 
  • Employer Three: Seven applicants, with one candidate advancing to a final‑round interview 
  • Employer Four: One candidate advancing to a final‑round interview  

Data collected from the event reflected strong student participation across colleges and industries, with high levels of engagement in both group and one‑on‑one sessions. These insights underscore the value of targeted, virtual recruiting experiences in facilitating meaningful connections.

The Virtual Career Fair: Discover Opportunities in China highlighted the impact of intentionally designed, global career programming that meets students and employers where they are. By combining preparation, thoughtful structure, and direct recruiter access, the fair supported informed exploration and confident next steps for students pursuing careers connected to China. 

As outcomes and insights continue to develop, this event reinforces Cornell Career Networks’ commitment to inclusive, globally focused recruiting spaces—where discovery sparks connection, and connection drives opportunity.
