Career Learning Outcomes

What are Career Learning Outcomes (CLOs)?

Explore, Expand, Connect with Arrows

The Career Learning Outcomes are our goals for what students should be able to understand, articulate, and apply as they move toward meaningful career paths. Through programs, opportunities, content, and services, the Cornell Career Network intentionally supports students in achieving each CLO, organizing our work around three core areas: Explore, Expand, and Connect.

Students and alumni participating in our programs will see the CLOs in event descriptions, within our resources such as the Career Development Toolkit, and in feedback surveys.

Explore

Examine your interests, values and strengths/skills as you explore and consider a variety of paths to make confident and informed career decisions.

Learning Outcomes for Explore:

  1. Students will be able to identify and articulate their unique interests, values, and strengths.
  2. Students will engage in activities to explore career paths and identify areas for further exploration.
  3. Students will reflect and align their interests, values, and skills to 1-2 career path(s).
  4. Students will create a plan for how they will pursue experiential opportunities in their fields of interest.

Expand

Develop skills and gain first-hand knowledge through academic and experiential opportunities in order to achieve personal and professional goals.

Learning Outcomes for Expand:

  1. Students will be able to assess strengths and identify areas for growth relevant to their unique career goal(s).
  2. Students will be able to identify and complete at least 1-2 experiences during which they develop career-related competencies and skills by the time they are ready to make intentional career decisions.
  3. Students will be able to clearly communicate the connection between their competencies and skills and their career goals, using real world examples.

Connect

Progressively build your network through faculty, staff, alumni, peers, and professionals to access and navigate career opportunities for life.

Learning Outcomes for Connect:

  1. Students will be able to explain how making connections is an important element of gaining career insights, enhancing professional skills, and accessing experiential or academic opportunities.
